Teas Etc | Mango Tango

When you just want a fun, fresh, and flavorful cup of black tea – Mango Tango hits the spot. It’s refreshing and balanced. Obviously, to enjoy this tea, you need to appreciate mango flavored beverages.

Mango Tango has a very smooth black tea (Sri Lanka/Ceylon) flavor. I’ve steeped several cups, and I’ve yet to have a bitter brew. The mango flavor mixed with marigold petals blends well with the black tea. The mango flavor shines through without overpowering the black tea.  The fruit flavor compliments the tea.  For me this is an excellent morning beverage. I’ve been steeping the tea with water around 200 degrees for about 3 mins. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m sure Mango Tango would taste great iced.

Rishi | Organic Yi Congou Special

I am enjoying many new teas from Rishi.  My wife was very kind to buy a lot of teas for me for Christmas.  Rishi’s Organic Yi Congou Special was very enjoyable.  With Yi Congou Special being both organic and fair trade certified, it makes this tea even more special.

Let’s start with Rishi’s description of the tea: “Yi Congou is the traditional black tea from Xuan En County that evolved from the rise of Keemun black tea’s popularity in Western tea markets during the mid-19th century. Often mistaken for Keemun and exported falsely as such, Yi Congou has a smooth, sweet flavor with a light chocolate note and sweet finish.”

Most of us that drink a wide variety of teas appreciate the vast differences between the many types of black, green, white, and oolong teas.  The range of flavors and extremes is endless with the many choices that tea vendors offer.  Yi Congou Special is just a simple pleasure.  It has a strong, yet smooth, black tea flavor that reminds me more of a Ceylon than a Keemun.  As Rishi mentioned, it’s not to be mistaken for a Keemun.  The dry tea also displays nicely for your guests.  The deep-dark color of the tea leaves are accented by copper leaves evenly scattered throughout the tea.  This tea shouldn’t be viewed as boring by any stretch.  It is an every day kind of black tea.  It’s an excellent morning and afternoon tea and it pairs well with many foods due to the fact that it doesn’t have dominating characteristics.  It’s a pure and true high-quality black tea.  The sweet finish makes it very enjoyable to me in the morning.  If you are looking for something slightly stronger than a Ceylon, but not as dominating or defining as a Keemun, I highly recommend Yi Congou Special.

Drink the Leaf | Golden Monkey

Drink the Leaf | Golden Monkey

It’s great to be back after a long break from marTEA.com.  I’m starting back with Drink the Leaf’s Organic Golden Monkey.   First of all, I’m a huge fan of most teas from the Yunnan Province.  The classic copper colored lush tea leaves are always something I look forward to.  To me, Organic Golden Monkey (Panyong Wang) is a hearty tea.  It’s a filling/satisfying tea.  I enjoy an almost earthy/sweet flavor coming from the tea.  Drink the Leaf describes the tea as having a cocoa flavor to it. I do detect the cocoa vibe, but I’m more intrigued by the balance of flavors.  This tea has something for everyone.  If you have a sweet tooth, sure you’ll pick-up on the cocoa notes of the tea.  I pick-up on the scent and flavor of a sweet smelling forest. The taste and scent reminds me of a solid mix of fresh air, flourishing vegetation, and fresh spring water.  At times, I can taste a faint pepper-like flavor.  I guess that is the beauty of a tea like this, it’s flavors are subject to interpretation.

Drink the Leaf: Organic Hong Tao Mao Feng

Drink the Leaf | Organic Hong Tao Mao Feng

Drink the Leaf | Organic Hong Tao Mao Feng

I started sampling tea from Drink the Leaf this week, and I have to say I started out with a winner.  This organic black tea has a wiry and long shape to its dried tea leaf.  There is a natural sweetness to the dried product that makes it very enticing.  I steeped the tea according to the recommended directions of 1.5 tsp/200°F/3 min.  The tea retains its sweet scent that rises from the steam after it is steeped.  The flavor had a rustic component to it that made it enjoyable for me.  It had a very warming nature to it.  You get a slight earthiness mixed with a natural sweetness in every drink.  At times, I could detect a nutty flavor when the tea was at its hottest temperature.  As the tea cools, the rustic flavors mellow and the sweet notes shine through with just a delightful and lasting classic black tea flavor.  I really enjoyed this tea.  It has a good mix of character, but it really is a relaxing black tea.  The flavors are mellow enough to calm yet pronounced enough to keep it interesting  The combination of the nose and flavor makes for a very pleasant tea drinking experience.

Drink the Leaf describes the tea as: “Keemun grown in the Anhui Province, near a high mountain lake. The dry leaf is black and golden. The color of this tea is one of my favorites in our selection- like a “red peach” but with a darker amber hue. The aroma is great, but the flavor is the key to this tea. Medium to full, with caramel and honey notes, and a long finish. Enjoy this tea- a new discovery for us.”

Tazo: Chai Tea Latte

Tazo | Chai Latte

Tazo | Chai Latte

For those of you new to tea (chai), Chai is an excellent introduction to the tea world.  Although the word “chai” translates to the word “tea”, most of us refer to Chai as a specific blend of herbs and spices with tea (originating from India’s famous Masala Chai).  It’s often spicy, sweet, and creamy.  Most Chai suppliers have a flavor that will appeal to you.  Concentrates make it easy and convenient to prepare the beverage and enjoy the experience of chai.  I’ve been drinking chai for years, but I still enjoy a good concentrate for its convenience factor.  My family and friends really like chai prepared this way.  Tazo’s Chai Tea Latte surprisingly has an authentic chai flavor.  I only say “surprisingly” because most ready-to-drink chais tend to lean toward the overly sweet side.  Tazo wasn’t afraid to add some spice to the mix.  It had a nice balance of spice and sweetness.  With each drink, there was a slight tingle on my tongue that was mellowed by the sweetness and cream that quickly followed.  The chai concentrate is very simple to prepare.  I go with about 55% concentrate and about 45% milk (you can use your favorite milk substitute).  I pour the concentrate into a microwave safe cup for about one minute.  Then I add milk.  At that point, I put it back in the microwave for another 30 seconds (shake carton before pouring and stir the chai as you add milk).  There’s no exact science to it, just heat the chai to your liking.  The more concentrate you add, the spicier the chai.

Ingredients: Black Tea, Black Pepper, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cloves, Natural Flavors and Star Anise, Cane Sugar, Honey, Ginger, Natural Flavors, Vanilla and Citric Acid.

The box label states about 70 calories per 4 fl oz (to make an 8 fl oz drink).  I highly recommend this product if you are in the market for a convenient way to make an extremely flavorful cup of chai.  Again, you have to enjoy the spices listed above.  They are well-balanced in this mix and shouldn’t be too much for you.  Keep in mind you can always mellow the beverage by adding less concentrate and more milk (or milk substitute).

Fuze: Black & Green (Acai Berry)

Fuze | Black/Green Acai

Fuze | Black/Green Acai

Black tea and green tea mixed in the same bottle – I like the concept.  I wasn’t sure how it was going to taste, but I assumed Fuze would make it tasty based on my past experiences with Fuze products.  Keep in mind, this is also Acai flavored…

It literally took me three drinks to figure out what I was tasting.  One thing I can say for sure about this beverage, you’re not going to be bored drinking it.  The first drink is just a super sweet berry blast (grape-like).  I’m talking big-time sweetness in every drink of this beverage.  I was really stretching to taste any tea in this mix.  The big tea flavor just wasn’t present.  I’m getting a light black tea flavor, but I can’t find the green tea.  The sweet berry flavor (Acai Apple flavor) just totally dominates this beverage.  You have to be in the mood for a sweet drink when you grab this bottle. There are more than 30g of sugar in each bottle (Crystalline Fructose).  The bottle label  boasts 133mg of Polyphenols, 225mcg Folic Acid, 138mg Vitamin C, 17 IU Vitamin E, 37mg Vitamin B Complex (for the label readers).  For me, this is a fun ready-to-drink beverage.  It has an enjoyable smooth berry flavor with soothing sweet notes, but the tea flavor was really missed by this consumer.

Bigelow: Vanilla Chai Latte (RTD)

Bigelow | Vanilla Chai Latte

Bigelow’s Vanilla Chai Latte is a vast departure from the boxes of Bigelow tea you will find in your local grocery store.  A product such as Bigelow Vanilla Chai Latte (creamy spiced black tea) has the potential to attract customers that otherwise would not buy loose leaf tea or tea bags destined for hot tea steeping (or iced tea).  I heard this product was coming, so I’ve been looking forward to this moment.  First of all, let’s start with the bottle.   My entire family thinks the bottle is cool.  There’s no way you can drink this without someone asking about it.  So, great concept for the bottle design on Bigelow’s part.  It does remind me of the vibrant colors you would see in India.  It’s one of the happiest bottles I’ve seen.  I’m glad to see Bigelow bring this product to the marketplace.  As an RTD consumer, it’s one that I’ve been waiting to try for a long-time.

Taste: Creamy and sweet with a splash of cinnamon, vanilla, honey and a touch of black tea.  It’s almost dessert like, but not over-the-top sweet.  I can’t stress enough the creamy-smooth texture of this product.  In addition to liking chai, if you enjoy coffee flavored RTDs (lattes, cappuccinos, etc.), you’ll most likely enjoy this beverage.  I’ve drank a ton of chais over the past couple of years, and this one is definitely more tame than the traditional Masala Chais as far as overall spice.  Having said that, it’s right on par in the spice department with many Chai RTDs I’ve tried.  You’re not going to get a mouthful of cardamom or cloves with this tea.  I know for most of my friends and family, that’s a good thing.  If you’re in the mood for a sweet, creamy, chai to take on-the-go – definitely try this.  It was a lot fun to drink.  I only wish the bottle was bigger.  The (10.5 fl. oz.) bottle states: Calories 160, Calories from Fat 25.  Another note at the bottom of the label: contains milk, soy.

Sweet Leaf Raspberry Sweet Tea

Sweet Leaf Raspberry Sweet Tea

It’s been a long time since I’ve reviewed a Sweet Leaf product, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been drinking their teas.  The Mint & Honey green tea has become one of my favorite sweetened green teas (RTD).  Back to this tea… I’m not a major raspberry flavored tea fan; however, I know a lot of  you enjoy raspberry flavored iced tea.  So, I thought I’d give this raspberry flavored iced tea a try.  I knew Sweet Leaf would deliver a quality product.  Just a note about Sweet Leaf: If the bottle says “Sweet Tea,” that’s what you’re going to get.  If you’re used to watered down unsweetened teas, your mouth is in for a shock.  The good news, the sweet stuff in the bottle is pure cane sugar (definitely check the bottle label for calorie counts).  I thought the overall flavor was pretty good.  It has a serious blast of flavors.  The one-two punch of sweet tea and mouth-puckering raspberry flavors will be sure to leave an impression on you.  After a couple of drinks, it’s not quite as powerful and the beverage becomes more refreshing.  The raspberry flavor blends well with the black tea.  The sweet tea and raspberry flavors are equally matched in this brew.  It does have a candy flavor aspect to it, but this tea is all about fun.  As I mentioned, I’m not a raspberry iced tea drinker, but I did find some enjoyment from this product.  If you like sweetened raspberry flavored iced teas, this will be an excellent choice for you.
